' We are taught to seek happiness.
They show us success.
Listen to the almighty and you shall become.
Calling on the superhero of my imagination.
The superhuman that escapes reality without ever leaving it.
You who I wish to become.
Sad, lonely, upset, and confused.
They are.
Similar, I am.
Almighty.
Yeah. '
— FRGMNT
Conceived as an immersive experience that combines sound, performance and visual media, Superheroes Cry Too is the first work of FRGMNT, a collective of 5 newly formed members connected by the Street Dance community. Their artistic practice is based on music, dance and visual/digital arts in a new light, far from the conventional.
The starting premise of Superheroes Cry Too is the unanimous desire not to trivialize the difficulties we go through; to make the discussion around the communication of all kinds of difficult emotions fluid, open and empathetic, and to normalize the respect of each other's vulnerability. Guided by a sound composition by Richard 'Shash'U' St-Aubin, the succession of installations and video projections explore the theories of superheroes and the truths of our realities.
Nubian Néné, Victoria 'VicVersa' Mackenzie, Ja James 'Jigsaw' Britton Johnson, Richard 'Shash'U' St-Aubin, Céline 'ezzeC' Richard-Robichon invite Mukoma-K. 'J. Style' Nshinga, Frédérique Rodier, Jontae McCrory, Frédérique 'Pax' Dumas, Rahime 'NOSB' Gay-Labbé and Jessy Colucci/Process Visual. Together, they combine their strengths and specialities to create a hybrid piece, where the codes of Street Dance participate in offering a protean, experimental and explosive signature.
