The pain of silence, of waiting, of rupture and rejection, and of solitude, illness and loss: Ta Douleur steers a fragile course through the uncertain terrain that is pain. This is pure creation, where the body’s eloquence, paired with speech fragments, gives rise to an incandescent and very sexual duo. Through dance – and out of ignorance and shared suffering, furious love, extreme jubilation and conjugal violence – two distinct people discover their shared humanity. They raise questions about the couple in the post-modern age; through their bodies, they give expression to a pain that is difficult to name, for it is physical and psychological as well as individual and collective. This is a sparse yet delicate show, an intimate window, one that reflects dancer Anne Le Beau’s continuing development as a performer. In a career spanning 25 years and counting, Le Beau has worked with renowned choreographers and companies. Here, she shines as a solo artist pursuing an open artistic process with collaborators from the worlds of dance, theatre and music – all of whom share a profound affinity with Anne Le Beau.
